Rate This Board by Out of Home Creative

Rate This Board allows a billboard designer to rate a random piece of billboard artwork using the following scale: 1 (not good), 2 (below average), 3 (average), 4 (very good), 5 (great). Then the designer talks about what they may have done differently for outdoor advertising. This week’s rating is provided by Melody Roberts, an OBIE nominated billboard designer and founder of Out of Home Creative, an outdoor advertising design firm specializing in out of home design for businesses, agencies, media buyers and out of home companies. Melody has been in the outdoor industry since 1999.

104.7 Fish

Rating 5

  • Now I know why I design and don’t shoot POPs. When Billboard Insider suggested I submit a couple billboards to rate, 104.7’s holiday board was on top of my list but I knew it wouldn’t be easy to get. I braved getting out of my car along a tight shoulder on one of the busiest interstates in Atlanta, GA (mostly home to 18 wheelers) to share this creative which sits in one of the most competitive billboard areas (within a ½ mile radius on both sides of the interstate, there’s approximately 10 billboards mostly 14×48’s and a few digitals).
  • It’s obvious to see what makes this advertisement so successful, the simple wrap of the monopole. What a great way to use the whole structure to allow 104.7 to stand out in this area.
  • Tie in the Christmas carol wording and the fact that this is a radio station, it’s a win.
  • To appreciate how much of a difference wrapping the monopole can offer an advertiser, I took an approach shot.
  • The only thing that would have made this even better; if the monopole was positioned on the Left then the pole graphic behind the logo would have been able to run straight down to the monopole and the gold ball on top of the pole could have been an extension.
