Rate This Board By Greg Callaham

Rate This Board allows a billboard designer to rate a random piece of billboard artwork using the following scale: 1 (not good), 2 (below average), 3 (average), 4 (very good), 5 (great). Then the designer talks about what they may have done differently for outdoor advertising. This week’s rating is by Greg Callaham (www.gregcallaham.com) who has 30 years of experience in outdoor advertising design.  Insider has used and endorses Callaham’s services.

Geaux Streauxs

Rating: 2 (Below Average)

  • For this LSU board, let’s start with design. Nice job! Good contrast, bright colors, it really grabs the eye and makes you look. And that is exactly why we all do this, right? To make the audience look.
  • But that’s only half of it. We’re supposed to make the audience read and remember a simple, clearly communicated message. And here is where this board fouls it off down the right field line. If you are not an avid LSU or Houston Astros fan, you don’t know what this board says or why it’s important. The message is cleverly communicated, but not clearly communicated.
  • I had to look it up to learn these two former LSU baseball players now play for the Houston Astros. Geaux is LSU-speak for “Go.” Streauxs translates into “’Stros,” short for Astros.
  • Between the weird language issue and the cursive text, the message is lost. I presume the locals understood it, yet even the names of those being honored are too small to read.
