Rate This Board By Greg Callaham

Rate This Board allows a billboard designer to rate a random piece of billboard artwork using the following scale: 1 (not good), 2 (below average), 3 (average), 4 (very good), 5 (great). Then the designer talks about what they may have done differently for outdoor advertising. This weeks rating is provided by Greg Callaham www.gregcallaham.com) who has 30 years of experience in outdoor advertising design.  Insider has used and endorses Callaham’s services.

ABC Plumbing – Rating 1 (not good)

  • Is my ABC Clogged? Wait. That’s not the question. This is an excellent example of why you have to be very careful when you position the advertiser’s name first in an ad. The simple fix here is to move the white rectangle over to the right, but there are other problems with this layout.
  • There isn’t enough contrast between the blue letters and the green background, so reading is more challenging than it should be.
  • The call to action is too small to read at all.
  • The contact information should be bolder and larger.
  • The van shouldn’t even be there because it’s camouflaged against the background color and it’s too small for John Q. Public to figure out what it is.
  • The drain used for the “O” in “Clogged” is nice, but it doesn’t save this design from a 1 (not good).
