NY State’s Illegal Highway Signs: What’s the Plan?

New York State’s congressional delegation is keeping pressure on Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) to remove rogue signs from the highway right of way or face loss of federal funds.

On February 1, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) told New York State’s DOT that it would withhold $14 million in federal funds if the state continued to violate the federal Manual that calls for uniformity in traffic signs.

Under the Cuomo Administration, the state installed hundreds of blue-backed signs on the public right of way to promote New York State tourism and products.

“As we near the . . . September 30 (federal) deadline, what steps have been undertaken by your Administration to prevent the permanent loss of these critical funds?” asked six Republican members of New York’s congressional delegation in a June 26 letter to Cuomo.  “We urge you to direct (state agencies) to follow the law.”

The letter was signed by US Reps. John Faso, Claudia Tenney, Elise Stefanik, Chris Collins, Tom Reed, and John Katko.

David Feldman of Park Outdoor Advertising said, “I had reminded Congresswoman Tenney just recently about the continued existence of the illegal signs as well as the refusal of the Cuomo Administration to stop selling products at rest area south of Binghamton on I-81.”
