Daily Billboard’s 3 of a Kind: Atop a Billboard

This month for our ‘3 of a kind feature’, Daily Billboard Blog is sharing three treatments featuring special extension cut-outs of people sitting atop a billboard to stand out in the crowded L.A. skyline.
First up is a billboard for the dark comedy superhero movie Kick-Ass spotted along Melrose Avenue on March 26, 2010. It was the first example of this kind of extension billboard that Daily Billboard had ever seen since moving from the U.K. to L.A. over ten years ago and it seemed like the coolest billboard ever, fitting perfectly with the irreverent nature of the film.
The second example is from Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood at the beginning of November 2015 for movie ticketing website and app Fandango. This outdoor ad featured Saturday Night Live’s Kenan Thompson sitting on top of the billboard in a persona created for the campaign as the world’s biggest movie fan ‘Miles Mouvay’.
The third example spied along La Cienega Boulevard on July 17, 2014 takes the concept to the max with sixteen people, including Harrison Ford, Jason Statham and Arnold Schwarzenegger, sat atop the billboard for the action movie sequel, The Expendables 3. It’s made even more fun by having Sylvester Stallone perched on the ‘3’ for extra emphasis.
This approach certainly seems to have been a staple in the entertainment industry for many years, so be sure to check out even more examples of this type of billboard gimmick, including for Ted 2, Delocated and Netflix’s recent Ibiza film at the Daily Billboard Blog.
Come back next month for three similar examples of characters bursting out of billboards to catch passersby eyes.
