Viscom Outdoor was founded in 1974.  The company operates and represents approximately 30 billboard structures in Northern California.  Insider talked with Owner Bob Townsend and Manager Dave Moran.

Bob you’ve got a great story about how you entered the out of home business.

We started using billboards to publicize out Dingus McGee’s restaurant located in a small town on the I-80 corridor between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe/Reno.  Our landlord, Stewart Wells, encouraged us to obtain a billboard to assist us in getting our name out. Well, inside of one year our business had doubled. We went from one billboard to 7 and utilized them for approximately 22 years of good success. We then sold the restaurant and began the billboard business.

Dave, tell us about your plant.

We have a unique plant which encompasses both static and exclusive digital bulletin coverage located along Interstate 80 just east of Roseville, CA to the CA/NV border.

This allows our advertising partners to reach a very targeted high concentration of recreational and vacationing audience base that originate from the numerous Northern California Markets including the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento DMA as well as the other numerous harder to reach Northern CA Markets.    Much of our inventory speaks with the mid to very upscale audience traveling to the unlimited year-round destinations in the Truckee, Lake Tahoe and Reno/Sparks Regions.

Our diverse inventory located on this section of Interstate 80 enables us to work with not only the smaller local business owners, but with the national advertisers looking for this unique on-the-go tourist based audience.

Who provides your vinyl? 

Our go-to vinyl supplier has been Circle Graphics for many years.  To date, the ordering process and turn around time has kept the process simple which is very welcomed in keeping our advertising partner’s campaigns effective and on time.

Who’s digital billboards do you use and what’s been your experience.

Watchfire has been our supplier and the product to date has been very reliable.  Another strong benefit is the software is very user friendly which makes it very easy to manage.

Any other thoughts?

To summarize, I feel it’s very important to believe in your product and advertising medium you’re representing to provide an effective campaign and strong service for your clients.
