Matt, how did you enter the outdoor business?

I got into the business answering an ad in the newspaper for a lease man in my early 20’s. I was lucky that Dan Schnitzer, who was starting Sun Outdoor in Tacoma, Washington, was willing to take a chance on a high school teacher with no real estate or sales experience. I think you are especially lucky in life when you meet your mentor early and they are willing to put time and effort into belong you learn your craft. I was very lucky, I made lots of mistakes, learned, and got hooked for life on a business I absolutely love.

What made you decide to go into business for yourself?

I went into business for myself in 2003 after being fired at Posterscope for insubordination. I figured at that point I had worked for start ups, medium size companies, and Fortune 500 companies and basically the same theme kept coming to light. I really disliked being an employee. I bristled at being told what and when to do it. In speaking with a lot of entrepreneurs, generally we have all been fired in our lives, for me it’s been twice.

Tell us about your plant.

We are a 13 year overnight success. I started at 0, have built just over 70 faces in Northern California in that time frame. When you are small its methodically slow. The first 6 months I was in business I thought the phone or email service I had might be broken, because no called or wrote !!!! We are all static permanent bulletins and tri visions along interstate freeways.

Any digital signs?

We have not dipped into digital yet, but continually look at those opportunities.

What’s the Northern California outdoor market like?

The Northern California media market is really pretty strong. But like anywhere else in the world, it’s about location, period. If you build really good stuff, are good to work with, the world will beat a path to your door.
