Allison outdoor began in 1958 as a custom sign and billboard company.  Allison has grown to become the largest outdoor advertising company in western North Carolina and Noth Georgia with 1200 billboards.  The firm’s inventory includes bulletins, trivisions, posters,  juniors posters as well as 20 digital billboards.  The firm is managed by Gary Ayers.

Allison Outdoor acquired Mashburn Outdoor’s East Tennessee outdoor plant in the first quarter of 2016.  The company was the subject of a 2014 Small Town News Article when it built digital signs in Sylva, North Carolina.  Insider talked with General Sales Manager Claude Dicks

How has the integration Mashburn’s East Tennessee plant gone?

It has gone really well.  We purchased 18 faces (9 static and 9 digital boards).  We’ve added one new location which has a Static and Digital face and we are waiting for our state permit to build 3 new static faces.  The biggest challenge is getting established and letting folks know there is another billboard option in town.

What are the out of home markets like in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina?

The North Carolina and Georgia markets we’ve been serving for almost 60 years.  So we are well established and control probably 90% of all billboard faces.  There’s some outside competition through weekly newspapers and local radio but not much.  In our Tennessee market we are a smaller fish in a bigger pond.  So we are having to adjust to the increase in competition not only in OOH but TV, Radio, Cable, etc.

Whose digital signs do you use and what’s been your experience?

We have 11 Formetco digitals and picked up 9 Prismaflex units in the Mashburn purchase.  We feel like for the money Formetco provides great value, customer service and an excellent performing unit..  We’ve had very few issues with our Formetco units.
