City Wants To Buy Clear Channel Billboards

Insider saw this article and wanted to provide it as an example of a novel approach Framingham Massachusetts is taking given Clear Channel Outdoors’ involvement in the iHeart bankruptcy.

The Framingham web site Wicked Local reports that Framingham Councilor at Large Cheryl Tully Stoll got the backing of the City Council this Tuesday to investigate the city’s options to acquire the billboards owned by Clear Channel Outdoor since those boards are now included in the iHeartMedia bankruptcy proceedings.

The Council has had a desire to reduce the number of billboards in the city and had previously approached Clear Channel about selling their nine structures. Nothing came of those discussions.

Framingham residents have formally opposed new billboards in the community since at least 1974. Billboards are banned under the city’s sign bylaw, which was revamped in recent years.

Insiders take – Of course this will go nowhere and the city will learn quickly that fair market value still is a reality and bankruptcy proceedings for a major corporate entity can be very complex. We’ll give them credit for trying.

  1. It floors me that cities consider this is a good use of government funds
