Bill Durden on building extensions

Bill Durden, Durden Outdoor

Yesterday Melody Roberts of Out of Home Creative talked about using extensions to make your billboards better.  Today Bill Durden of Durden Outdoor talks about building and installing extensions.

Bill, what is the extension made of?

10 millimeter thick Chloroplast.  Durden started using this years ago instead of plywood for safety reasons.  If a storm blows off an extension it will normally blow just the chloroplast piece off since we use 2×4’s or 2×6’s as uprights for our extensions.

How do you fix the vinyl to the extension?

We’ll we get our extensions printed on PSV (pressure sensitive vinyl) and then adhere this to the chloroplast.  So it’s like a big sticker.

How do you fix the extension to the billboard?
We use a jigsaw to cut out the chloroplast to the shape we want.  Then we normally use a table saw and rip down a 2×6 (giving us a 2×3 finished board) and make a trim all around the back of the extension for added stability.
What are some lessons you’ve learned in making and installing extensions?
We have a standard maximum height of 4 feet tall on the top extensions and 3 feet for side extensions.  This size just works for our installers.  The minimum size we try to do is 12″.  Anything smaller than that is Usually not worth doing as it’s hard to view from the road.  Pricing is important too.  We think extensions really make our clients ads more effective so we keep pricing compete even at $14-$18 per square foot.
